Soaked and Settled

Soaked and Settled

After the long, dry spell of late summer, the rain has been a welcome relief. It has soaked deep into the soil, giving our brassicas and winter salads the lift they needed. Crops that were struggling back in September have now pushed on with the mix of sunshine, showers and mild days. What once looked like a difficult winter season has, thankfully, turned into a promising one.

Over in Spring’s Garden, we have sown green manures into the autumn soil, an investment in fertility and structure that will help the plot grow stronger and more productive in the seasons ahead.

On the farm, the flock has begun strip grazing as we prepare for tupping with our existing ram and a newly arrived organic Texel. We have also welcomed 150 more poults, bringing our flock to around 420 and increasing the supply of fresh eggs for Heckfield Place and Home Farm Produce Sales.

As the days shorten and the light softens, the land feels settled once more, gathering its strength for the colder months to come.
